Mindset Myths and Overcoming the Fear of Success
Sep 17, 2024
As a business coach and artist, I know firsthand how mindset myths and the fear of success can hold us back. But the good news? You can shift your mindset and embrace the belief that anything is possible. Let’s debunk a few common myths and transform that fear into growth so you can confidently build a fulfilling art business, even if you're self-taught.
Myth 1: "I’m Not a Real Artist Unless..."
One of the biggest mindset traps is believing you’re not a 'real' artist until someone else validates you—whether it’s a gallery or a critic. But the truth is, being an artist is about claiming that title for yourself.
Take Cassie Holmes, one of my AFH VIP Members. Once an introverted artist, she shifted her mindset, and soon enough, galleries started approaching her. She believed in her art first, and that change opened doors.
Quick win: Claim the title of "artist" right now. Write down three reasons why you’re a real artist. Start with: “I am an artist because…”
Myth 2: "I Have to Suffer for My Art"
There’s a myth that you have to suffer for your art or live by the 'starving artist' narrative. But that’s simply not true. You deserve to thrive. Creative freedom and financial success can absolutely coexist—you call the shots.
Action: Set a small income goal for your art. Even if it's just $100, this will help you start seeing your art as a business.
Fear of Success
Sometimes, we’re scared of what happens when things go right. Will you be able to handle it? Will you have to change? But the truth is, you’re already capable of handling success.
Look at Jodie Garth, another one of my AFH VIP Members. She once felt paralysed by the fear of success, unsure if she could manage a thriving art business. Today, she has her work in front of her dream buyer. Success doesn’t have to mean pressure—it can mean freedom, creativity, and joy.
Action: Visualise your success. What does it feel like to 5x your sales? Journal about it.
Take one action today: Whether it’s claiming your title, setting a goal, or visualising success, these small but powerful mindset shifts will unlock your potential as an artist. Each step you take brings you closer to building the art business you dream of—a business where creativity and financial success thrive together.
Remember, success isn’t just for those with formal training or connections. I’ve seen countless artists, embrace their potential and grow their art businesses beyond what they thought possible. You have the power to do the same.
The journey begins with one simple action. Will you take it?
