Emily shares how she transitioned from casual creativity to professional practice, the mindset shifts that helped her step into her role as an artist, and how letting go of the pressure to "find her style" actually unlocked new opportunities — including her very first commission.
We also dive into the behind-the-scenes realities of entering art prizes, coping with rejection, and finding joy in the process. If you're a mum, a self-taught artist, or simply wondering what it looks like to build momentum in your art career, this episode is a must-listen.
Coming from a family that encouraged creativity, she shares that she never really thought that she could become a professional artist as she didn't really see anyone around her doing so. Covid led to a shift in her career and that's when she really started to dive into exploring art making and doing online classes along with sharing her art on Instagram.
Emily shares some great advice for new and beginner artists as well as fellow mums and self taught artists who are wanting to step into making art as a career. After she let go of having to find her style she found that it led to her first commission and then it just flowed from there.
She also talks about applying for many art prizes - the rejection that comes along with putting in many applications time and time again. As well as sharing some great mindset shifts for aspiring artists that are seeking representation or wanting to enter their art into a prize.
Emily exhibited her work at Eltham Community Gallery, where she showcased a beautiful collection of paintings that reflect her evolving style and artistic voice.
