Episode #15 How To Get Back To Making Art After A Long Break

Oct 12, 2022

Welcome back to another episode of the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast.

In this episode, we’re diving into something every artist encounters at some point—how to return to your personal art practice after taking a break. Whether you’ve been travelling, juggling life responsibilities, or just fallen out of routine, Ros and Laura share practical tips to help you reconnect with your creativity and make art a consistent part of your life again.

This topic is especially timely, as Laura has just returned from two months overseas and is finding her way back into studio rhythm. Ros offers valuable suggestions for getting started, including the importance of revisiting your “why” and setting small, achievable goals that feel good and sustainable.

We explore habit stacking (inspired by James Clear’s Atomic Habits) and how simple strategies like implementation statements, setting intentions, and creating a self-care ritual around your art time can help reignite your motivation and keep your practice going—even when life feels full.

Laura summarizes some takeaways from this conversation and suggestions that Ros had for her to re-establish her art practice:

  • Setting your intention and why you make art
  • Bringing yourself back to why it means so much to you
  • Writing your intention statement with a small achievable goal
  • Incorporate a 5 min practice in with your daily routine
  • Look at your calendar to see where there would be larger stretches of time for you to create
  • Find ways to make your practice a self-care ritual - either with music, a candle, incense, oils etc…
  • Accountability - verbalizing what your goals and intentions are and getting a good friend to check in with you

Ros reads out a lovely listener review at the end of the show @kath.artique on Instagram. If you would like for us to read a review please leave one for us on Apple Podcasts.

Listen in for supportive ideas, mindset shifts, and creative encouragement to help you start fresh with your art.
