4 Hacks to Increase Your Creativity
In this blog, I’m sharing four practical, proven ways to increase your creativity and maintain momentum in your art business. These strategies have helped me—and many artists I coach—stay creatively energised while running a sustainable and profitable creative practice.
We’ll cover how to reduce stress, set healthy boundaries, prioritise rest, and reconnect with joy through creative play. When you implement these practices, you’re not just protecting your creativity—you’re fuelling long-term success.
Let’s dive into the small but powerful shifts that will keep you inspired, energised, and thriving in your creative journey.
1. Minimise Your Stress Levels
Stress disrupts our ability to create—our nervous system needs calm to be imaginative. When you’re feeling creatively blocked, it might be your body signalling that it needs care. Self-care is a necessity, not a luxury. Integrating it into your daily routine can keep you creative and prevent burnout. I’ve noticed that when I’m stressed, my creativity dries up—it’s a clear sign that I need to pause and take care of myself. To help manage stress, start each day with a simple mindfulness practice, like deep breathing or a short meditation.
2. Set Boundaries to Avoid Burnout
Without boundaries, it’s easy to push ourselves to the point of burnout. Setting limits is an act of self-respect that preserves your energy for creative work and your loved ones. Personally, I’ve had to remind myself to say ‘no’ more often to protect my creative energy. Identify one area where you can set a boundary—whether it’s saying no to extra commitments or carving out specific time just for joyful artmaking. Remember, saying ‘no’ to distractions is saying ‘yes’ to your art and to yourself.
3. Listen to Your Body and Take Rest Seriously
Rest is not a luxury; it’s essential for your creative process. Treat rest as an integral part of your creative journey, not something separate. I’m currently learning to go slow and get to bed earlier, even when it feels counterproductive. It’s taken time, but I’ve realised that rest is necessary. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep and incorporate short breaks during your creative sessions. Whether it’s a brief meditation, a gentle walk, or a tea break in the sun, these moments of rest can rejuvenate your creativity.
4. Create Just for Fun
Not all creative work has to be productive—play is crucial for rejuvenating creativity. Embrace play as a vital part of your creative health, not just something frivolous. When I allow myself to play with art without goals, it reminds me why I love creating. Dedicate time each week to experiment with new materials or techniques purely for fun. Join workshops like Art for the Heart to fuel your creativity through play and explore new artistic avenues without pressure.
To nurture your creativity, maintain joy, and stay resilient, it’s important to manage stress, set clear boundaries, prioritise rest, and embrace play. By integrating these practices, you’ll be able to build a fulfilling art business while avoiding burnout.
