Welcome Module

Here is why it pays to learn from an experienced artist - I know exactly where most students get stuck when setting out to create a watercolour masterpiece.

In the welcome module, we are going to hone your artist’s mindset so you can stop that inner critic from getting in your way. Because it's that pesky inner critic that stops most students in their creative tracks. Let's tame that beast!

We'll lay the groundwork for your continued success by looking at your current mindset, challenging it and developing new thought patterns that will help you succeed rather than hold you back. 

Module Highlights:

• Get orientated with a warm welcome video showing you how to access the course material and the Facebook group so you can paint your heart out without a worry!
• Discover the recommended watercolour painting supplies, brainstorm realistic ways to create an art space and store your art so you are ready for optimum success

Module 1

Wet on Wet Magic

In this module, we are going to develop your skills in the wet on wet technique. We will check out your art supplies and loosen up with my all-time favourite warm-up exercise. I promise, you’ll love it!

Then we will dive into the wet on wet technique and lose ourselves in the magic of watercolours. We will learn how to control it as much as possible. And we will also just learn how to let go and allow the paint to take the lead. Because that push and pull of control and surrender is a part of the beautiful process of creating art in watercolours.

Finally, you'll use these skills to create modern leaf and flower motifs that showcase the wet on wet technique.

Module Highlights:

• Try your hand at my go-to, all-time-favourite warmup exercise that is pure joy
• Apply your new skills to paint three bold contemporary flower motifs using the wet on wet technique
• Create divine wet on wet leaf motifs that are stunning all on their own and discover how to enhance them by adding a few details

Module 2

Botanical Motifs

Botanicals are all the rage at the moment and there is a reason for it. The beauty in nature is universally appreciated and so soothing. In this module, you will discover how to gain creative inspiration - and calm - from the natural world around you no matter where you live.

Join me on a walk through the Australian bush. Notice and celebrate the diversity of shapes, colours and textures in nature and learn how to turn this inspiration into beautiful art on a range of substrates.

Module Highlights:

• Walk with me in the Australian bush and slow down enough to actively and purposefully appreciate beauty
• Tap into nature so that you can create your artworks from a place of inspiration, calm, joy and respect for your subject matter
• Create a display of your own leaf samples to fuel your creativity on days when your ideas bank is running low
• Replicate the shapes and forms of nature using the wet on dry painting technique

Module 3

A Good Wash

Learn how to create stunning watercolour washes and experiment with masking fluid to create beautiful motifs in your work.

In this module, you will discover and experiment with my top tips and tricks for creating the perfect wash. And this isn't just for the fun of it! By gaining this skill, you will be able to create gorgeous backgrounds that will make your artworks pop.

Module Highlights:

• Experiment with two ways of achieving a flat wash so that you can call yourself an expert!
• Learn what a gradient wash is and what the best way is to create this stunning effect
• Uncover the secret of the variegated wash and discover how intriguing this aesthetic is
• Explore the magical medium of masking fluid when you create negative space in your works. This medium will rock your world!

Module 4

Colour Play

In this module, you will explore and master the wet on dry technique as we create two botanical artworks which showcase this technique. Through these artworks we will explore colour schemes further. In fact, by the end of this module you will be a pro in a range of different colour schemes that you can use over and over again, no matter what you are painting.

Discover the difference between watercolour paints and acrylic inks in this module and begin to delve into the concept of composition.

This module will leave you with two beautiful artworks of your own and yet another piece of knowledge which will serve you time and time again.

Module Highlights:

• Master the wet on dry technique as you create two divine works of your own
• Discover the power and punch of the complementary colour scheme and hone your skills in using peaceful analogous colour schemes
• Get acquainted with acrylic inks and open up new possibilities in your art - you may well fall a little bit in love with this medium!

Module 5

Make Your Mark

Now this module is jam-packed! Try your hand at a whole BUNCH of amazing, surprising AND eye-opening mark-making techniques that will take your art to the next level. If you are looking for a point of difference, a way to make your art stand out, a means for bringing some more character and individuality into your art, this is the module which holds the answers for you.

Once we have tried these fun mark-making techniques, we will apply these skills to two projects - a contemporary botanical piece and a layered floral creation both of which will be frame-worthy!

Module Highlights:

• Have a mark-making extravaganza and explore all the fun that can be had with watercolours once you get into the spirit of creativity
• Apply your newfound mark-making techniques to a contemporary botanical piece which will be picture perfect
• Paint a layered floral artwork, integrating a range of mark-making techniques so your creation really shines as a unique piece of art

Module 6

Composition Considerations

Unearth some of the go-to compositions that are found in the world's most pleasing artworks and gain confidence in using these compositions to guide your own creations.

In this module, you will produce two artworks, each of which will be guided by a traditional composition. Together, we will uncover many helpful compositional rules... AND learn when they can be thrown out the window! Because rules are made for breaking!

Module Highlights:

• Unearth some of the go-to compositions that have guided successful, visually-appealing artworks for centuries
• Create two separate artworks exploring two different compositions that will have your viewers well-impressed
• Paint beautiful and colourful wet-on-wet backgrounds that will wow!
