The Single Most Important Ingredient in Your Art Business
We all know the art world can feel isolating—especially when you’re navigating it alone. I once heard a psychologist talk about creating a “bushfire emergency plan” for life’s hard moments, and it hit me how important this is for artists too. When you’re facing a creative block, criticism, or just a bad week, your support network becomes your lifeline.
As an artist, you need a plan for the times you’re questioning your path, getting negative feedback, or facing a creative block. When the inner critic really wreaks havoc, a solid support network is essential. We need our support network for these times so we don’t give up on our dreams because of setbacks. But also, we need them for the good times so we can celebrate our wins!
Consider the proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This holds especially true for artists.
A support network offers emotional support by connecting you with people who understand your struggles and successes. These connections provide a wealth of inspiration and ideas; conversations with other creatives can spark new perspectives and innovations. Additionally, being part of a network opens doors to new opportunities and collaborations, leading to exhibitions and exciting projects. Through guidance and mentorship, you can learn valuable lessons from those who have already walked the path you’re on.
Building Your Support Network
First, seek out mentorship. Identify potential mentors by looking for artists or professionals whose career paths you admire. Reach out with respectful messages expressing your admiration and desire to learn from them. Always respect their time by approaching them with specific questions and showing gratitude for their insights.
Next, join art communities and groups. Many towns have local art societies or clubs that you can become a part of. Additionally, social media platforms like Facebook host vibrant art communities where you can engage with like-minded individuals. Attend workshops and events, both online and in-person, to meet people and develop your skills further.
Engaging in collaborative projects is another fantastic way to build your network. Look for opportunities through calls for art or collaborative projects. Don’t hesitate to invite others to join you in exhibitions or joint pieces. Be open to other perspectives; flexibility and openness to others’ ideas are key to successful collaboration.
Make the most of social media. Share your journey by posting updates about your work and process to attract like-minded individuals. Engage with other artists' posts and join online conversations to build relationships. Partner with artists for joint sessions or shared blog posts to create valuable content together.
Lastly, attend and host networking events. Network organically at art openings and exhibitions. You can also organise events yourself, such as art nights or online meet-ups, to establish yourself as a community connector.
Embrace and Build Your Network
Creating a support network is not just about what you gain but also about building a mutually supportive community. Embrace connections, collaborate with courage, and watch your success unfold.
Think about the potential benefits of being part of a creative community. How do you imagine a support network could help you navigate your artistic journey? If you’re already part of one, how has it made a difference in your life?
